Show Notes

  1. What the data tells us about HYROX performance
With limited research available on the sport, Ludwig and his colleagues analysed race results to establish a clearer picture of its demands. Running accounts for nearly half of race time, but strength related stations such as the sled push, sled pull, farmer’s carry, and burpee broad jumps can have significant predictive value for overall performance.
  2. Finding the sweet spot between strength and endurance
HYROX demands enough strength to handle heavily loaded stations without carrying unnecessary mass that could compromise running performance. Ludwig discusses the possibility of strength and VO2 max thresholds, where reaching a sufficient level may matter more than continually trying to push either quality higher.
  3. How to train for the demands of HYROX
From VO2 max and running economy to VO2 kinetics, core stability, and strength, the discussion breaks down the qualities athletes may need to develop. The goal is not simply becoming a better runner or stronger lifter, but developing the combination of capacities required to repeatedly transition between running and functional exercise.
  4. Why rowing could be an untapped opportunity
HYROX athletes remain well behind specialist rowers on the erg, suggesting room for improvement. Rowing may also offer a valuable way to develop aerobic capacity while reducing some of the neuromuscular load associated with high running volumes, all while remaining specific to an actual HYROX station.
  5. Where HYROX science goes next
With the research base still small, major questions remain around concurrent training, optimal strength thresholds, pacing, monitoring, and HYROX specific programming. Ludwig shares where future studies could take the field as athletes become increasingly specialized and competition at the top continues to tighten.
