  1. What happens when you enter cold water

Cold water immersion occurs in distinct phases. Jørgen explains the initial cold shock response and why muscle function can begin deteriorating within just a few minutes, potentially leaving even strong swimmers unable to propel themselves to safety despite not yet being hypothermic.

  1. The hidden risks of swimming induced pulmonary edema

Jørgen discusses swimming induced pulmonary edema, a condition his team encounters at Norseman, why its underlying cause is still not fully understood, and why recognizing the early signs can be difficult when heavy breathing and fatigue are already expected during an endurance race.

  1. Why athletes can get colder after leaving the water

Getting out of cold water does not necessarily mean the cooling stops. Research at Norseman has shown that core temperature can continue to fall through transition and into the early stages of the bike, potentially affecting dexterity, bike handling, and athlete safety.

Unlike heat and altitude, the physiological benefits of cold acclimatization remain unclear. Jørgen explains why learning how to manage cold conditions, equipment, clothing, transitions, and exposure may currently be more important than trying to create a major physiological adaptation.
