Show Notes

1. From VHS tapes to GPSTed reflects on the evolution of sports science from manually recording every athlete movement with VHS tapes, paper, and stopwatches to becoming an early adopter of GPS technology in elite sport. The tools have changed dramatically, but the fundamental question remains the same: how do we accurately understand the demands placed on an athlete?

2. Why speed and distance only tell part of the storyTwo athletes can experience very different demands despite covering similar distances. Ted explains why acceleration, starting velocity, movement direction, and the way an athlete moves all influence the true cost of activity and why traditional GPS metrics can miss important parts of the picture.

3. Metabolic power versus mechanical powerTed and Martin revisit the debate around metabolic power, its limitations, and its value when interpreted within those limitations. Rather than seeing mechanical power as its replacement, Ted explains why the two can offer different perspectives on the external work performed and the estimated internal demand required to produce it.

4. Understanding the “erraticness” of team sportsTeam sport movement rarely follows a smooth velocity trace. Ted introduces the concept of erraticness and explains why constant changes in speed can dramatically increase the demands of an activity, even when total distance and maximum speed appear relatively low.

5. Why we need to put the time back into time motion analysisDistance, speed, and acceleration mean very little without understanding how long the effort lasted and how much recovery occurred between efforts. Ted and Martin discuss why modern GPS analysis has often focused heavily on motion while overlooking time, and why bringing duration and work to recovery patterns back into the equation could give practitioners a much clearer understanding of team sport demands.
