Athletica, is hiring!

January 17, 2021

In line with our nearing launch and need to scale rapidly, we’re expanding our small but exceptional team at Athletica. The purpose of Athletica is to apply the evolving HIIT Science principles for athletes and coaches across as many sports as possible using advances in modern technology. Our key business, throughout both HIIT Science and Athletica, is the development and application of training intelligence in sport. To begin our next phase, we will add three additional members to our already strong team. These include a junior or intermediate level web developer, a junior or intermediate level data science developer and a junior or intermediate level coach/sports scientist. If there is one thing we know, it’s that people are everything when it comes to success in sport or business. Therefore, for each role, our desire is to hire at the casual level for a trial interim period (TBD), with the potential for full time continuing employment thereafter. During this time, we’ll all learn about one another, how we work, our business, etc. We’ll then both know if we want to take the next step. Compensation will be at the mid-market level, but if you join us, your why is the reason you’ll be chosen over any other factor. The required skills and experience for each position are described below. Interested in applying? Send your CV and cover letter, outlining how you meet the skills, knowledge and experience of the position desired to hello@athletica.ai before January 30th.

Junior to intermediate level considered with the right attitude. Small team where you will have anonymity (if you want it!). Your work will be valued, your voice will be heard, and you will be supported and contribute daily to the development of Athletica. This is a remote position that you will be able to perform from anywhere in the world that has good internet connection, with flexible working hours, while sometimes having conference calls or one-to-one calls with team members in different time zones.

Junior/Intermediate Data Engineer

Have you ever wondered how technology can help athletes? In this position, your job will be to take part in the development of data science- and machine learning-based softwares which will help athletes by providing an adaptive coaching plan that adapts to the individual’s fitness levels, goals, training sessions and lifestyles, based on first principle exercise science. You will get to work in a small team and take part in all aspects of the algorithm developing process. However, your workload will mostly include cloud service related operations, database design and maintenance. You will focus on bringing the development version of the algorithms into production, working on our backend, mostly in Python.  Required skills:
  • BSc or MSc in computer science or related field (or demonstrated equivalent level, such as through industry experience)
  • Experience with cloud services and containerization technologies
  • Knowledge of data science and machine learning tools and techniques

Have you ever thought about what tools are best for telling us when to apply HIIT the next time? How do we know when we will handle it again without driving our athlete into overtraining or injury risk? If you’ve read our book or taken our course, you’ll know about how important this variable will be when we look to design the ideal program. Both heart rate variability and subjective comments were key factors we discussed. But is one better than the other?
Maybe. We’ve stumbled upon an incredible study that might just help clear our thoughts on the matter in terms of athlete readiness and when to apply HIIT again in the future to maximize performance potential. The blog post written by Diego Hilgemberg Figueiredo compares training plans guided by either HRV or subjective inner feelings. The findings may surprise you. Check out a sneak peak in the graphic below as to why heart rate and HRV can’t always bring us certainty around readiness to perform. They’re good, and helpful, but you must know your context! Combine it with feel to get the most power in your programming.
