The Application of High-Intensity Interval Training for American Football
Gain a Competitive Edge for Your Athletes, Your Team, and Yourself
After completing this HIIT course, you’ll know:
The unique factors of the sport (and variations) that need to be considered when applying high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
Physical performance contributions (speed, strength, endurance) to the sport.
Aerobic oxidative, anaerobic glycolytic metabolic response, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal strain targets as applicable to the sport and athlete.
The different HIIT types applicable to the sport based on the physiological targets.
How to apply manipulations of HIIT variables to optimize the training program for sport and athlete variations.
Surveillance and monitoring tools used to assess external and internal training load and training load response.
How to incorporate HIIT into your training programs with context of sport and athlete-specific variations.
Course Description
The Practical Application of High-Intensity Interval Training for American Football course teaches how to effectively implement High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to take performance to the next level.
This course focuses on the unique aspects of your sport, the skill and physiological requirements needed to successfully perform at a high level, and the key HIIT methods to apply in order to elicit the desired physiological responses for optimal training adaptation and performance.
While the course includes theoretical knowledge to facilitate understanding, it mostly focuses on the practical application to help you build true mastery so you can deliver measurable gains on the playing field, and not just in the lab. The expert instructor presents specific tools, tactics and performance indicators to tailor HIIT to your particular context with detailed surveillance methods and training plan examples that he developed over years of hands-on coaching of elite athletes.

About the Instructor
Dr. Hugh Fullagar
Lecturer in the Sport and Exercise Science Discipline Group within the University of Technology's Faculty of Health
Dr Fullagar is a lecturer in sport and exercise science. His research is focused on evidence-based methods to improve performance and reduce injury in sport, with a specific focus on better understanding the relationship between fatigue, recovery (most notably sleep), injury and training load. Hugh acquired his international PhD at the FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence within Saarland University, Germany under the supervision of Professor Tim Meyer (National Football Team Doctor of the World Champions, Germany) in collaboration with UTS Associate Professor Rob Duffield and Professor Aaron Coutts in 2017. In Germany Hugh also worked in both an applied and research setting as part of a sports science team which was responsible for servicing various European soccer clubs, Olympic athletes and the German Football Federation. Most recently prior to joining UTS, Hugh was with the Oakland Raiders (National Football League, USA) as a strength and conditioning assistant and performance analyst. Prior to entering the NFL, Hugh was the sport science coordinator with the University of Oregon Football Program. Hugh is also an accredited exercise scientist and sports scientist (ESSA) and accredited strength and conditioning coach (ASCA). Hugh was also recently named the Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) Sport Scientist of the Year for 2017. He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed research articles and contributed to several scientific conferences around the world.
February 2018 – present Lecturer, University of Technology Sydney, Australia
2017 – Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach and Performance Analyst (Player Performance Enhancement) at Oakland Raiders (National Football League; NFL), Alameda, CA, USA.
2015-2017 – Sport Science Coordinator (Oregon Football) at University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, USA.
2013-2015 – Sport Science Support at the Institute of Sport and Preventive Medicine (F.I.F.A Medical Centre of Excellence), Saarbrucken, Germany
